It
is high time that the words "cottage" and "cycling"
found themselves paired together more frequently, because Muskoka
offers incredible cycling opportunities for all. From picturesque
roads to fabulous trails, Muskoka provides a riding adventure for
all levels of riders and relaxers. Whether your pace is full speed
ahead, rocketing down miles of winding road or meandering trail,
or whether you prefer just casually cycling to the corner newspaper
box, Muskoka cannot be beat.
Be sure to bring your bicycle to Muskoka this season, or stop into
the friendly purple neighbourhood bicycle shop to grab a pair of
wheels specifically tailored for cottage riding. You'll soon discover
that Muskoka is one of the greatest places on the planet to enjoy
cycling. And hey, what better way to burn off those extra goodies
we all enjoy while on vacation?
There are definitely a number of Muskoka riding destinations that
should not be missed. While at the cottage, spin into the Buckwallow
Cycling Centre, located between Gravenhurst and
Bracebridge off of the Gravenhurst Parkway (just follow the signs
to the KOA). Buckwallow is Muskoka's premiere trail riding location.
Immaculately maintained by Mike McLaughlin, Buckwallow offers excellent
mountain biking trails for all abilities. All trails are clearly
marked and a bike wash station, washroom, and beverages are all
found at the trail head.
Other Muskoka trail riding locations include the Bracebridge Resource
Management Centre (located off of Hwy 11 north just past the Hwy
117 exit) and the Torrance Barrens, a truly unique riding experience.
In addition, chances are extraordinarily high that a trail lies
just beyond your cottage backdoor, waiting for you and your family
and friends to explore.
For all you "roadies", I recommend picking up a District
of Muskoka road map from a regional service station. Just pick a
direction and enjoy! Make your route as long, as short, as hilly,
or as scenic as you like. Muskoka roads boast little traffic, fresh
air, and wonderful views. Don't be afraid to explore down roads
you've never travelled, in fact that's half the fun...Keep your
eyes peeled for wildlife, you'll be amazed at the beauty of a deer
standing on the shoulder waiting for you to pass.
The Town of Bracebridge also offers great cycling opportunities.
Favourite routes include following the Muskoka River along Beaumont
Drive with a stop at Kirby's Beach to take in the view or jump in
for a swim, and then proceeding onward to Pride of Muskoka Marine
to savour an ice cream on the docks before doubling back into town.
Or grab a listing of local artisans and tour from gallery to gallery
upon your two wheeled friend!

Muskoka? Drop by Ecclestone Cycle (that big purple house in Bracebridge),
the owners and staff are happy to lend their expertise. Whether
you're in need of bicycles for rent, repairs, or just need directions
to the local trail heads, stop in and say hello. The Ecclestone
Cycle web-site (www.ecclestonecycle.com) details a plethora of Muskoka
cycling information, including postings of group trail and road
rides. Ride your bicycle in Muskoka, enjoyment guaranteed! Happy
Spins!
